FAQs – Roaming Horizons Motorcycle Tours

Do I need a motorcycle license to join a tour?
Yes, a valid motorcycle driver’s license from your home country is required to participate in a guided tour or to rent any motorcycle. This ensures that all riders meet the legal standards for operating a motorcycle and have the necessary skills for a safe and enjoyable experience. If you’re visiting from another country to India, Tibet or Nepal, we recommend carrying an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) in addition to your home license, as it may be required in certain regions or by local authorities. Without a valid license, we cannot allow you to ride for liability and safety reasons.
Do you require a specific level of experience to join a guided motorcycle tour?
We do not wish to exclude anyone based on their experience level. However, for your safety and enjoyment, we recommend that you have enough experience to feel confident riding a motorcycle, especially when navigating curves on both tar and dirt roads. You should also be comfortable riding a touring bike on highways and through mountain passes. Each individual tour has its required level of experience to be safe, and our team will discuss how that tour may suit your skill level & experience prior to booking. Our ground team is always on hand to assist all riders should they find any conditions challenging. Some Travel Insurance for Motorcycle touring requires minimum levels of experience to provide cover.
Is there an upper age limit for riders?
We don’t impose a specific age limit, but riders must have enough experience and be in good health to fully enjoy the tours. For riders over the age of 70, our Team may require additional details or documentation. Our office will assist you with this process when preparing your paperwork for the tour, ensuring that all necessary requirements are met smoothly. Of course, checking with your Health Professional as to your capability is very important.
Does Roaming Horizons provide transport from hotels and Airports for my tour ?
We offer complimentary transfers from the arrival Airport and our Roaming Horizons locations at the beginning and end of your guided tour and in some cases from Airport to the Hotels in other locations.
What is the process if I need to cancel my booking?
If you need to cancel your guided motorcycle tour:
● For cancellations made more than 60 days before the tour start date, you will receive a full refund in the form of store credit.
● If you cancel between 59 and 31 days prior to the tour, a 50% cancellation fee will apply, and the remaining balance will be issued as store credit.
● Cancellations within 30 days of the tour start date will result in the loss of the full tour cost as a cancellation fee.
● Your initial Booking deposit is non refundable, but can be held against future tours. We understand that circumstances vary, so cancellations may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis for special consideration. For full details, please refer to our Guided Tour Cancellation & Refund Policy.
What should I do if I lose the keys to my tour motorcycle?
Losing a motorcycle key comes with a replacement cost, which varies depending on the bike model and can be as high as $300 per key. This can cause significant issues during your tour, as you won’t be able to start the bike and may face delays in getting back on the road. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you keep the key in a secure place at all times to avoid any disruptions to your ride during the day. Taking extra care with the key will save you from potential costs and hassle during your trip. On most occasions, our ground team will take possession of the keys overnight, in order to service and refuel the bikes in readiness for the next days adventure.
How much luggage am I allowed to bring on the motorcycle tour?
Our top priority is ensuring that every rider feels fully prepared and comfortable for the entire duration of the motorcycle tour. We understand the importance of having enough gear and clothing to suit varying weather conditions and personal needs throughout the journey. To provide ample storage without compromising the riding experience, we allow each rider and passenger on our guided tours to bring one large suitcase for their main belongings, as well as one carry-on sized bag for additional essentials. This ensures that everyone has what they need for the ride while maintaining convenience and comfort during the tour. A tank bag or small bag to be placed on the luggage rack, is advised to carry daily essentials.
Will I have access to the internet during the tour?
The majority of the hotels we use during the tour offer complimentary WiFi either in the rooms or in the lobby for guests. However, in some remote areas, WiFi may not be available or might come with an additional charge. Our team also carries a local dongle for access where signal is available. Only the Tented Camps at Nubra Valley have WIFI.
While on the road, WIFI may be limited to within a 10-15klm range of a specific destination. Please advise your loved ones and friends about the network conditions prior to your trip.

Yes, fuel and oil for your motorcycle are covered on all scheduled riding days. The inclusion of fuel in the tour package offers significant value to those booking with Roaming Horizons.
What is the number of riders in each tour?
To ensure the group has a chance to connect and ride as a unified team, we aim to limit the group size to between 12 and 16 bikes. As an Australian-based tour operator, the majority of our riders typically come from around Australia and New Zealand.
What type of insurance will I need?
Appropriate Travel Insurance for Adventure based activities is compulsory and essential. It must cover riding a motorcycle over 250cc, and include repatriation in the case of an emergency. Some policies also require you to provide proof that you own a motorcycle the equivalent capacity registered under your name for 6 months or longer, to the one you will be riding on our tours. The majority of our tours use a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450cc machine.
What kind of riders typically travel in our guided tours ?
Our guests are passionate motorcyclists who love the experience of touring by bike. Most are in their 30s to late 60s, with some younger and a few older riders as well. They are typically successful retirees or professionals who have both the time and financial means to embark on these kinds of trips. Unlike other tour operators, Roaming Horizons is an Australian-based company that prides itself on delivering a higher level of service and creating a great group riding experience.
Are the tours exclusively for men, or are women also welcome?
Women are absolutely welcome on our tours, not only as co-riders on our mixed tours or companions who may choose to ride in the support vehicle, but also as full participants on their own motorcycles. We encourage women to join the adventure, whether they prefer to ride alongside others or enjoy the journey from the support vehicle, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their role, feels included and part of the experience. We also offer Female Only tours to cater for Ladies that like to tour together and bond over their shared experience.
Are Non Riders Welcome?
We are unique as a Motorcycle Tour Operator, as we encourage and welcome Non riding friends and family members to join, in one of our comfortable following vehicles, and enjoy the Adventure with the riders. Why should they miss out? This may be subject to numbers on a specific tour, and is POA. We also welcome Pillion on the rear of the Motorcycle.
What is not included in the tour packages?
The tour price does not cover International or Domestic airfares or transportation to the starting city, lunches, alcoholic beverages, or activities of personal interest. Each trip description provides specific details on what is included for that particular tour. Additionally, the price does not include medical, evacuation, or trip insurance, all of which we highly recommend. For more information on these types of insurance, please visit our website. A Visa to enter the country is also not covered.
Any items not specifically mentioned as included should be considered as not included in the tour price.
What type of accommodation is provided by Roaming Horizons?
Our goal is to offer quality accommodation, including luxury hotels whenever possible on specific tours. However, there may be times when our route takes us to areas where we must opt for the “best available” options. Rest assured, all accommodations will always be clean, safe, and comfortable. It is Twin Share, unless you have requested a Single Supplement upgrade. Mountain tours may be a mix of 3 star hotels, Cabins, Tented ( Glamping ) camps, or Homestays to add to the cultural experience. All accommodation has a western style toilet & shower, however in the remote regions Hot Water may be a luxury. But that is all part of the Adventure!

Our tour leaders carry cellular phones and can be reached for emergency calls during the day via the support vehicle, or in the evenings at the hotel. What are my options if I’m unable to attend the tour after paying the deposit?
Please read the Terms & Conditions, and Cancellation Policy on the website.
What happens if my motorcycle breaks down ?
We will make every effort to get your motorcycle repaired as quickly as possible. In the meantime, if you are riding one of our bikes and a spare motorcycle is available on that particular tour, it will be provided for your use. However, please note that we are not obligated to replace a motorcycle that becomes inoperable due to an accident. In such cases, you may need to make alternative arrangements, depending on the circumstances of the damage.
Are the motorcycles offered covered by insurance?
Our Team includes third party insurance coverage for any incidents . However, any damage to a motorcycle including parts ( very cheap ) while on tour will be at the rider’s cost. In the case of total loss, where the motorcycle cannot be repaired and must be replaced, this will be at the riders cost.
What are the Road Rules in India and the Himalayas?
Indian traffic travels on the same side of the road as we do in Australia & NZ, the left side of the road. The remainder of the road rules are more relaxed by the locals, with plenty of hustle & bustle in built up areas, but the speeds are a lot lower in most instances than what you would be used to at home. Prodigious use of the horns is commonplace & encouraged, not as an aggressive thing but to say “hello, I am close by”. It is common for cattle, camels, dogs and other wildlife or domestic animals to be encountered, so caution is advised at all times.
How can I charge my devices while on tour?
All our hotels have available power, via your travel adapter, for charging devices at days end. However in the high mountains, power may be limited or not available or available for only a few hours in the evening. We suggest you travel with a Power Pack to charge them in the event of this being the case.
What about Altitude Sickness?
AMS can affect even the fittest persons, or those that are unfit, it does not discriminate. We have strategies in place to acclimate all riders prior to travelling to height. Constant Hydration, and limiting Alcohol & Coffee are important steps to minimising the risk. We also recommend taking Diamox, subject to you consulting with your Health Professional. This is a blood thinning agent. Our team carries Oxygen, and our Tour Medic is on hand to assist should anyone feel the affects of this. Our team carries testing tools for determining oxygen levels in the blood and we monitor all riders periodically to ensure their safety.
Currency and Spending Money in India?
The local currency is the Indian Rupee, approx 55 Rupee to the Australian Dollar. While in the bigger cities & villages you can use a credit card, or WISE travel card to pay for items or withdraw cash at an ATM, in the mountains cash is the only form of payment, so it is important to carry some Rupees, to pay for lunch and other small items. However, as our tours are inclusive of all other costs, you may only spend a few hundred rupees during the actual tour. Purchase of local handicrafts pre or post tour should be factored in as well. Tips for our ground team at the end of the tour should be factored in as well.
Visa Requirements ?
Travel Visas are required for entry to India, Nepal & Tibet. We will advise regarding securing your Visa for travel in each location once booked. Indian Visa can be applied for online, or via VHS Global office in Australia.
How much Baggage Allowance is there on Indian Domestic Flights?
Most local carriers only allow 15kgs checked luggage. We suggest you add at least 5kgs when booking, or go online post booking and add as it is much cheaper than turning up at check in and being charged at that point.
How is the luggage carried during the tour?
All main luggage is carried in our back up vehicles, and is covered in the case of bad weather. We encourage all riders to have a tank bag, back pack, or small waterproof bag to tie to the rear of the motorcycle for essential daily items, including a change of clothes.
What about Health Precautions prior to Travel and Medical Emergencies?

We strongly encourage all riders to consult their local health professional, based on each persons personal health requirements, well in advance of your tour. If there is a specific Travel Doctor close by, visiting them may also be an option. They can advise on what immunisations may be required, and what medications to take with you on your adventure.

We advise only to drink bottled water, or soft drinks/beer that are sealed, and the tops cleaned prior to drinking to avoid digestive issues. Our Team provides 2 lites per day per person on tour, and many of our hotels offer free bottled water on arrival. We advise NOT to drink the tap water or even clean your teeth with tap water.

In the case of a medical issue or emergency on tour, our Tour Medic and Team Captain will determine the best form of treatment or action including hospitalization if required. Each persons health & safety is our number one priority! Our Team Captain, & Medic speak both English & Hindi, and can manage any emergency situation comfortably.

What about individual dietary requirements?
We request advice regarding your personal preferences or requirement pre tour. The diet of the majority of Indian locals is Vegetarian. In the high mountains where there is little or no access to refrigeration, meat is scarce. However in larger Towns & Villages there may be meat options. Of course in larger Hotel, and in Leh and other larger cities, there are many options including western food. The Indian cuisine is amazing and lip smacking and varies from state to state. We ask you to advise our Team regarding any food allergies and we will do our best to cater accordingly, but cannot promise adherence in all locations.
Are any Entry Permits needed during the Tour, and how do we obtain these?
Yes, permits are required for entry to certain locations in some of our tours. The Roaming Horizons Team organise and facilitate these and they are included in the tour cost. We require your Passport information to secure these permits where needed.
Should we take taxis in India?
Taxis are very cheap in India, and readily available, however we strongly advise against approaching a taxi rank, or using any of the touts at the Airports for example. Only use Prepaid Taxis like Meru,Mega Cabs,Uber, Easy at the counters at the airport. Or ask your hotel to facilitate one.
How early should we get to the airport for Domestic flights?
You should arrive at least 2hrs before any domestic flight as entry into Indian Airport has one more layer of security check where Passport and Booking is matched before being let in, and lines could be very long, even at regional airports. Larger airports such as New Delhi & Mumbai are very busy.
